Extremophile Organisms for Improving Water Quality: A Binational Problem

Water problem addressed: Too dirty

Summary: In this project, we studied the polluted water from two important lakes by the Mexico-USA border: Lake Salton Sea and Mexicali’s Lagoon. We analyzed the reaction of extremophile microorganisms to pollution in order to evaluate it's possible usage as bio-indicators for water quality. We found that the resistance properties of tardigrades to polluted environments make them excellent candidates to this use.
